You've launched a new website, you search for your business on Google, and... nothing. It's one of the most common questions we get from new clients, and the honest answer is: it depends what you mean by "show up". Getting onto Google and ranking well on Google are two different things, and they happen on very different timescales.

Indexing vs ranking: the difference

Indexing is Google finding your pages and adding them to its database. Until a page is indexed, it can't appear in search results at all.

Ranking is where your pages appear for a particular search, such as "roofer King's Lynn" or "web design Norfolk". A page can be indexed but sit on page five, where almost nobody sees it.

How long does indexing take?

For a new website, indexing usually takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Google has to discover the site first, normally through links from other websites, your Google Business Profile or a sitemap submitted through Google Search Console. A brand-new domain with no links pointing to it can take longer, because Google has no reason to visit yet. Searching your exact business name is usually the first thing to start working.

How long does ranking take?

Ranking for the searches that bring in customers takes longer, typically months rather than weeks. How long depends on:

  • Competition: "plumber London" is far harder than "plumber Downham Market".
  • Your domain's history: a site that's been around and has links from other sites usually moves faster than a brand-new one.
  • Content: pages that properly answer what people are searching for, one page per service and per area, give Google something to rank.
  • Your Google Business Profile and reviews: for local searches, the map results depend heavily on your profile, how close you are and your reviews.
  • Technical health: speed, mobile-friendliness and a site Google can crawl easily all help.

Anyone who guarantees you page one within a set time is guessing.

How to speed it up

  1. Set up Google Search Console. Verify your site, submit your sitemap and use "Request indexing" on your most important pages. It's free, and it tells you exactly which pages Google knows about.
  2. Link your website from your Google Business Profile. It's one of the first places Google and customers will find it.
  3. Get listed in the right directories. Consistent business name, address and phone number across directories like Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yell and trade directories helps Google trust your details.
  4. Build proper service and location pages. One page for each main service and each main area you cover, each one genuinely useful, not a copy with the town name changed.
  5. Link your pages together. Linking from your homepage and service pages to newer pages helps Google find them and understand what matters.
  6. Keep collecting reviews. Reviews are one of the biggest factors in the Google map results for local businesses.
  7. Keep adding useful content. Real project write-ups and answers to customers' common questions give Google more reasons to show your site.

How we handle it for clients

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find my new website on Google?

It may not be indexed yet. Search "site:yourdomain.co.uk" on Google: if nothing appears, Google hasn't indexed it. Submitting your sitemap and requesting indexing in Google Search Console usually helps.

How long does it take to rank on the first page of Google?

For local, less competitive searches it can be a matter of weeks to a few months; for competitive searches it can take much longer. It depends on competition, your content, links and reviews.

Does a Google Business Profile help my website rank?

It's the main factor for the map results in local searches, and linking it to your website helps Google connect the two. Keeping it active with posts, photos and reviews helps.

Should I pay for ads while I wait for SEO to work?

Many businesses do. Ads can bring in enquiries straight away while SEO builds over time. We run Google and Meta ads alongside SEO for exactly this reason.

Will changing my old website hurt my rankings?

It can if it's done carelessly, for example if old page addresses disappear without redirects. Done properly, with redirects and the same or better content, a new site usually improves things.
